RYAN - A Fellow Ratty Enthusiast

This is Ryan on 6th August.  We put his ratty Monty and his brothers ratty Scrabbles into a small travel box and hide them in a bag and they went into ICU to see him. (the doctor knew) He was thrilled to say the least and it was the highlight of his whole week!

This is Ryan again on the 6th August. He is still on oxygen here and also has a feeding tube in place. He was also still taking pain drugs. All the tape used to hold tubes in place has since been removed because he has developed an allergy to it and it was making his rashy and itchy.

This is the machine that is keeping Ryan alive. As you can see it is the size of a large washing machine. It weighs over 250 kilos! He can go on small walks now but it takes a nurse to push it, another nurse to carry the spare power lead as it runs on battery while he is moving, another nurse to push his wheel chair and a doctor in case something happens and he resuscitation.

This shows where they have cut Ryan open for his operations. So far he has had five of them. The large patch to the right covers where the tubes go into him that run his heart. There are two of them and they are the size and thickness of a garden hose. These go into his heart and run the left side for him and the right side is currently still doing ok on it's own.

This is Ryan after we had opened the first lot of mail that I took in for him. There were letters, cards, gifts, photos, so much! He was thrilled and totally amazed that people from all over the world would go to the trouble for him. He asks me each visit now if he has mail, and it certainly brightens his day!

This is Ryan one week later. His feeding tube is gone as is the oxygen. The marks you can see on his face are a result of the allergy to the tape that was holding the them in place. We were able to go to the lounge where he spent over 1 hour with Daicos a fellow members ratty who tops the scales at 1 kilo!

It was really amazing to watch these two together. It was like Daicos knew Ryan is special as he sat with him for ages and licked him and snuggled with him without wanting to investigate his new surroundings. It was also really nice to see Ryan smiling as the day before hadn't been one of his best.

Another shot of Daicos cheering up Ryan. Next week Scrabbles and Monty get to go visit once more and Ryan is very excited about that. He was due to get out of ICU in 2 weeks if things go well, but he got some bad news the day before and it will be closer to 6 weeks now as they don't have enough nurses trained for his machine yet. He was really down about that.
